Best Season to visit Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park, situated in Madhya Pradesh, is a pioneer in the scientific conservation management in the country. It reflects the success of the ‘Project Tiger’ in India as it boasts of a significant number of the tigers. The park was established in the year 1955 and has since actively contributed to the preservation of many endangered species. The National Park was taken under the Project Tiger Reserve in 1974. Kanha Tiger Reserve is formed including the 1,067 km² of its surrounding buffer zone along with the neighboring Phen Sanctuary of 110 km². Therefore, it is considered as the largest National Park in Central India. Not only this, it has been listed in the top 10 tourist spot of India. The park boasts a wide assortment of animals including tigers, twelve horned Barasingha, Jackal, Hiran, black faced langur, a ubiquitous chital, guar and monkeys. A tourist can also spot porcupines, sloth bears, pythons, sambar and a magnificent mouse deer. The park also abodes a colorful and exotic range of avifauna, including bee-eaters, Indian rollers, paradise flycatchers, golden orioles, outlandish hornbills, egrets and numerous Kingfishers. Virtually, every tourist who visits Kanha is moved by the diversity of its flora and fauna. Kanha enjoys a tropical climate. Summers remain hot and humid with a high of 40.6°C and a low temperature of 23.9°C. The weather remains pleasant in winters with a varying temperature of 23.9°C and 11.1°C. Kanha receives an annual average rainfall of 152 cm. The best time to visit Kanha national park is from Mid October to the end of June. During monsoon season, from July to Mid-October the park remains closed.

Every year Kanha National Park is open for visitors from the 01st of October to till 30th of June. As per the climate of Central part of India, the peak season for Kanha National Park is during winters, say October to March. Most of the tourists visit the park between November and March, mainly because the summer’s heat is unbearable. The period between November and February is excellent for visiting Kanha national park as the rain fall during monsoon rejuvenated all the nature & vegetation. Particularly this period is best for bird watching. A lot of migratory birds visit the park during the winter months. During the time period from March to May most of the vegetation at Kanha National Park gets dried & Tiger Sighting is relatively easier than it is in winters. The month of March is the best month for wildlife viewing and the temperature is not very high however Months of April & May provide a great & almost sure opportunity to Wildlife Photographers specially who is looking for some rare photographs of the largest member of cat family.

In Summer

Summers in Kanha is an ideal season for a trip to this National Park for wildlife photography. Here summer season prevails from March to June months. Being a moderate season, you can expect some discounts in later phase of summer period. During peak summer time, temperature reaches 45°C with heat waves. Although safaris are challenging but their results are very good as tiger sighting chances are very high in summers.

In  Winter

Winters in Kanha national park can be experienced from December to February months. Due to Christmas holidays and New Year weekend, large number of Foreigner tourists visits Kanha tiger reserve to celebrate their holidays and enjoy the jungle safari drives. During this period, fog situation of North India, may produce some challenges like delay in flights and trains but Central India remains free from foggy situation. It is good time for family holidays and jungle photography.
